We’re gathering the addresses of the best B&Bs, hotels and other overnight locations we can find. All of which, we feel, are great places to go for a weekend or a bit longer. And it’s definitely a case of the latter when it comes to canvas hotel Vinha Da Manta in Portugal. Here, you’ll stay in one of eight canvas lodges which have plenty of light and are incredibly spacious.
What makes Vinha Da Manta a great place to stay?
The lodge tents at Vinha da Manta are arranged in such a way that you have plenty of privacy and you can make the most of the serene and beautiful surroundings. The porch offers spectacular views over the green valley, and the outdoor bathroom completes this Portuguese fairy tale. Owners Menno and Jacqueline believe that happiness comes from the little things: sitting around a campfire together, relaxing in a hammock, taking a dip in the natural swimming pool, and riding through the mountains.
What’s for breakfast?
Breakfast consists of a long buffet, with several kinds of freshly baked bread, homemade jam, eggs, local cheeses and meats, seasonal fruit from the orchard (such as delicious cherries and strawberries in May). What’s more, there’s thick yogurt and all kinds of ingredients to make your own muesli (their own walnuts, almonds, granola, figs, honey). And to wash it all down: freshly squeezed orange juice, and coffee of your choice from the Italian espresso machine. And the best bit? Breakfast is served from 9 a.m. until everyone has been. So sleeping in is not a problem…
Our Tip
Go to the canvas hotel in the spring, and visit the ancient villages in the area. Large fairs are organized everywhere, which are great fun to join as they celebrate local folklore, local produce and are really authentic. Not a tourist in sight.
Good food
Menno has inherited his passion for cooking from his mother. He may not call himself a chef, but his dishes are mouth-watering nevertheless. With ingredients that include good wine, good oil, fresh vegetables and only pure products, everything tastes just that little bit better.
A canvas lodge starts at €95 per night, including breakfast.
