Imagine how lovely it would be if, like a child, we could occasionally look at things through fresh eyes — without any label or judgment. This exercise can help.
- Sit or lie down in a relaxed and comfortable position and close your eyes.
- Imagine that you have been blind from birth. You have never experienced color before, and you can’t even imagine it. Spend at least five minutes doing this. It’s okay if your mind wanders; if it does, just guide it back to the exercise.
- Open your eyes after five minutes and view everything as if you are seeing it for the first time. Enjoy all the colors and shapes in front of you.
- Your mind will probably want to name everything automatically. Direct your attention back to your consciousness and only focus on the variety of colors, light, shadows and shapes.
- Are you starting to notice things that you never seen or thought of before? That’s a good sign: you are now seeing afresh.
- Continue with this fresh perspective as you go about your daily activities, and try to imagine everything as if it is the first time you see or experience it.
This exercise can help if you feel stuck in your own thoughts. Or if you are looking for a solution to a problem or would like to develop your creativity.
- This exercise comes from the book, Mindfulness for Dummies by Shamash Alidina.
